The experience
The hike starts with meditational breathing techniques matched to your pace as you climb the narrow steps up Cangshan Mountain. You'll cover about 3.5 kilometers of steep terrain, then transition to the flat Jade Belt Road for 1.5 kilometers, passing Zhonghe Temple where you rest and eat snacks while looking out at the full view of Erhai Lake spread below. The descent takes a wild road down 4.5 kilometers to Zhonghe station, where your guide picks you up and drives to their home.
Dinner is organic food cooked in the guide's yard: roasted duck leg with rosemary, vegetable salad with roasted duck, miso soup with local mushrooms and tofu, and a choice of local yogurt with seasonal fruit, sweet dumplings with black sesame, or striped rice cake in milk. You drink red wine or Chinese Pu'er tea while eating. If you want, the guide will photograph you during the hike and provide those images afterward.
After dinner, you walk into Dali ancient town to find a tea house with a Japanese yard, a cafe with European vintage decor, or a cocktail bar with an English-speaking owner: your guide recommends places and you choose how long to stay at each one. The whole day runs about nine hours from start to finish.
