The experience
The route opens in Urumqi with a VIP airport transfer to a luxury hotel, then heads west to Sayram Lake, the "last tear of the Atlantic", where you spend a full day circling the shoreline. Unlike quick viewpoint stops, you'll explore Swan Bay, the Lighthouse, Moon Bay, and the S-Curve, each revealing a different face of the alpine lake ringed by snow-capped mountains. A scenic boat cruise adds a perspective from the water, and a traditional Kazakh greeting ceremony in the grassland introduces you to local music and customs. If you travel in June or July, lavender blooms blanket the nearby fields in Yining.
Day four takes the Yizhao Highway (ranked among China's most beautiful scenic roads) as it winds through dramatic valleys, alpine forests, and mountain passes in the Tianshan range. Your guide stops at carefully chosen viewpoints without rushing, giving photographers time to work. The road leads to the Xiata Ancient Trail, a historic Silk Road trade route where you walk through pristine alpine meadows with views of the Muzart Glacier. From there, you move into the quieter northern forests (either Qiaxi Forest Park or Kurdening Nature Reserve depending on the season) before reaching Nalati Grassland in time for sunset over the endless hills.
The cultural core arrives on day six: you're welcomed as an honored guest at an authentic Kazakh wedding, where you dress in traditional clothing, join festive dances, and eat a banquet of over ten traditional dishes while your guide explains the symbolism of each custom. A private visit to a nomadic family follows. On the final full day, you visit a traditional Kazakh settlement and horse ranch to watch felt-making and embroidery demonstrations, then drive the Duku Highway (one of Asia's most spectacular scenic routes) back to Urumqi. The tour includes daily bottled water, a farewell dinner with ethnic features, an ethnic-themed souvenir, and complimentary onboard Wi-Fi or eSim.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly happens at the Kazakh wedding on day six?
The Kazakh wedding is an authentic celebration where you attend as an honored guest. You'll dress in traditional clothing, join in festive dances with live folk musicians, and sit for a traditional Kazakh banquet featuring over ten authentic dishes. Your guide explains the cultural meaning behind each custom and tradition throughout the meal.
How much time do you actually spend driving on the Yizhao and Duku highways?
The Yizhao Highway crossing on day four is a full-day scenic drive through the Tianshan Mountains with multiple photography stops at viewpoints. The Duku Highway on day seven is an afternoon and evening drive back to Urumqi. Both are treated as experiences in themselves, not just transit: your guide stops to explain the geography, wildlife, and historic Silk Road routes.
Will I stay with local families, or in hotels?
You stay in premium hotels throughout the tour, with the exception of a private visit to a nomadic family on day six as part of the cultural immersion. The family visit is an afternoon or evening encounter to experience grassland traditions firsthand, not an overnight stay.
What's included in the tour price, and what costs extra?
The tour includes airport pickup and drop-off, all accommodations, the Kazakh wedding experience, nomadic family visits, daily bottled water, a farewell dinner, an ethnic souvenir, and onboard Wi-Fi or eSim. International flights to China and any domestic flights or train tickets not listed in the itinerary are at your own expense. Personal shopping and souvenirs are also separate.
Is there a real guide, or is it self-guided?
A live English-speaking guide accompanies the entire tour, sharing insider stories about local legends, Silk Road history, and Kazakh culture at each stop. A real-time translation device supporting 50+ languages is available as an option if you need additional language support.
How physically demanding is this tour?
The tour is suitable for all fitness levels and is wheelchair accessible, with accessible transportation throughout. It includes leisurely walks through alpine meadows and forests rather than strenuous hiking, though days involve several hours of driving and standing at viewpoints. It is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
