Ride sand instead of snow, with the Pacific and Iquique spread below you

Sandboard down Cerro Dragón, the largest urban dune in the world, located in Iquique. Hotel pickup brings you to the dune, where an instructor teaches you the technique to ride safely on tracks suited to all levels. Two hours of riding ends as the sun sets over the ocean, with the city lights coming on behind you.

The experience

What makes sandboarding different from snow is the speed and the surface: sand grips differently, and the learning curve is gentler than you'd expect. The activity starts with pickup from your hotel 30 minutes before you head out, then a 20-minute drive to Cerro Dragón. Once there, you get a complete setup: board, boots and helmet. An instructor teaches you the technique from the ground up. No prior experience is needed. The dune has tracks for all levels, so you're not learning on the steepest pitch.

Two hours of riding is physical but not punishing: the source material calls it intense but accessible to all. The real draw is the setting: from the dune you see the Pacific Ocean on one side and the entire city of Iquique on the other. The timing is built around the sunset, which turns the ride into something worth photographing. After you've had your time on the slopes, the return to your hotel is quiet and unhurried, giving you time to settle before the evening.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

Do I need to have sandboarded or snowboarded before to do this?

No. The instructor teaches the technique from scratch, and the tracks are designed for all levels. Previous experience is not required.

What's the view like from Cerro Dragón?

Cerro Dragón sits between the Pacific Ocean on one side and the city of Iquique on the other. The dune is the largest urban dune in the world, so the scale of the landscape is part of what makes the ride memorable.

How much of the day does this take up?

Hotel pickup happens 30 minutes before the activity, the ride itself is two hours, and the return is unhurried. Plan for a half-day commitment, leaving your morning or late afternoon free for other plans in the city.

What equipment do I get?

The sandboard, boots and helmet are all provided. You bring only yourself and wear clothes you don't mind getting sand on.

Is this activity available year-round?

Yes. Iquique has the conditions for sandboarding all year, so you can book this whenever you're in the city.
