The Rio Baker runs faster and colder than most rivers in Patagonia because of glacial melt upstream.

A 3-hour rafting activity on the Rio Baker in Patagonia where you descend through rapids with a professional guide, all gear supplied. Hotel transfers are included. Guides speak English, Spanish and Portuguese. Children from age 1 are welcome, though infants must sit on an adult's lap.

The experience

Three hours on the Rio Baker means one continuous hour paddling through the rapids themselves, with the rest split between gearing up, transfers to the put-in, and the float sections between the harder water. The river carries more volume here than most of Chile's other rafting runs because of the glacial melt feeding it from the south. You get all the equipment necessary (wetsuit, helmet, life jacket, paddle), and a professional guide who reads the water and calls the moves.

The day starts with pickup from your hotel, a drive to the river, and a safety briefing on the bank before you enter the water. Once you're in the raft, the guide positions you and the other paddlers, then steers you into the first rapids. The Rio Baker's current does most of the work. Your paddle keeps you stable and helps the guide angle through the drops. Between the big sections, the river flattens enough to catch your breath and look at the canyon walls.

Transfers back to your hotel are included, so you don't arrange separate transport. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the departure, and the whole group stays small enough that everyone gets attention in the boat.
