The experience
The tour opens with an introduction to Punta Arenas' geography and the ice-age landscape that shaped Patagonia, then heads an hour south by air-conditioned vehicle toward Fort Bulnes. The drive itself is part of the experience: you pass small settlements built as weekend retreats that became permanent homes, watch for endemic birdlife, and see the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego Island and Dawson Island across the water. At Fort Bulnes (founded in 1843 when the government wanted to secure the Strait). You walk among native flora to reach a viewpoint overlooking the landscape relief the guide has explained.
The Nao Victoria Museum holds life-size replicas of four vessels central to Patagonian and maritime history. Magellan's Nao Victoria, the ship that gave the museum its name, sits alongside the Beagle (the Cherokee-class boat that explored Patagonia's flora, fauna and geology), the James Caird (built by Shackleton's crew during their Antarctic survival), and the Goleta Ancud (built in Punta Arenas itself in 1843 to claim the Strait). The guide walks you through each one's story during the tour.
The Municipal Cemetery, a National Monument, spans beautiful cypress avenues and mausoleums. The guide explains how the city's early cosmopolitan character (people from many nations who published newspapers in different languages in the early 1900s) is reflected in the nationalities represented here. The final stop is the Magellan monument in the city square, where the guide discusses the neoclassical architecture built by French architects for wealthy regional families, including the Braun Palace and the Montes Palace (now the Municipality building).
