The experience

The route starts in Llanquihue, a town on the lake's southern shore known for cured meats and as the source of the Maullín River. From there the tour follows the shoreline north to Frutillar, a German town that emerged in 1856 as a shipping dock and grew into a settlement of breweries and mills. You'll walk past its well-kept German-style houses and gardens with views across the water to the Osorno and Puntiagudo volcanoes. The German Colonial Museum is available to enter if you choose, showing how the settlers lived. Frutillar also hosts the annual Frutillar Musical Weeks, a classical music festival with international attendance.

The tour continues to Puerto Octay on the lake's northern shore, the first port where agricultural products once departed toward Osorno. From there you reach Villa La Cascada on the slopes of the Osorno Volcano, then Ensenada, where a waterfall and Laguna Verde sit among the volcano's lower terrain. The air-conditioned vehicle returns you to Puerto Varas after eight hours on the road and at the stops.
