The experience

Four days means you cover the major sites without rushing: Ahu Tongariki with its fifteen restored moai standing on the largest platform on the island, Rano Raraku where the statues were quarried from volcanic tuff, and the ceremonial villages at Orongo and Tahai. A private guide walks with you the whole time, speaking English or Spanish, and the route includes breakfast, lunch and water each day. Transport between sites is arranged. You don't drive yourself.

The half-day treks let you start with Tahai near town (three restored ahu with Ko Te Riku, the only moai with restored eyes), then move to Orongo on the Rano Kau crater rim where the Birdman ceremony once took place. The full days go deeper: Rano Raraku shows moai still lying on their backs and foreheads in the ground where they were abandoned, and Ahu Tongariki across the bay holds the most imposing platform. Anakena Beach, where the Miru Araki royal family lived, has turquoise water and the refined Ahu Nau Nau. Lunch happens at Rano Raraku itself, on the crater rim among the statues.

The tour also reaches Puna Pau, the red stone quarry where the moai's topknots were carved, and Ahu Akivi, one of the few ceremonial platforms inland, whose seven restored moai face the setting sun with astronomical alignment. Volcanic caves like Ana Te Pahu and Ana Kakenga break up the walking. You'll need moderate fitness for the terrain and the altitude of the crater sites, and the guide can adjust for dietary needs if you note them at booking.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What's the difference between the half-day and full-day treks on this 4-day tour?

The two half-day treks cover Tahai and Orongo with shorter walking. The two full days tackle Rano Raraku, Ahu Tongariki, Anakena Beach and the volcanic quarries and caves, with more ground and more time at each site.

Do I need to buy a separate ticket for Easter Island's national parks?

Yes, a National Park ticket is mandatory and included in the cost of this tour. It's valid for 10 days from your first entry and covers all park sites you visit.

What is Rano Raraku and why do we spend time there?

Rano Raraku is the volcanic tuff quarry where nearly every moai on the island was carved. You walk among statues still lying on the ground where they were abandoned, and it's where lunch happens on the crater rim, giving you time to sit and absorb the scale of the carving work.

Is accommodation included in this 4-day tour?

No, accommodation is not included. The tour covers meals, water, transport and a guide for each day, but you'll need to arrange your own hotel or lodging on Easter Island.

What should I know about the physical demands of this trek?

The tour requires at least moderate fitness. You'll walk across uneven volcanic terrain, climb to crater rims, and spend hours on your feet each day. It's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or if you're pregnant.

Can this tour work around dietary needs?

Yes, the guide can accommodate vegetarian, vegan and other dietary restrictions. Let the operator know your requirements when you book.
