Ferries, penguins and 18th-century Spanish fortifications in one island day

A private day tour from Puerto Varas explores Chiloé's isolated island culture across three stops: the Puñihuil Penguin Colony where Magellanic and Humboldt penguins nest, the Caulín wetlands where Black-necked Swans and Herons feed, and Ancud's colonial Fort of San Antonio. A professional guide shares the island's myths and legends while the route crosses the Chacao Channel by ferry and covers roughly 10 to 11 hours total.

The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup in Puerto Varas or Puerto Montt, then follows the Pan American Route south toward Pargua, where you board a ferry to cross the Chacao Channel. That 45-minute crossing is the gateway: the water separates mainland Patagonia from Isla Grande de Chiloé, and during the passage you watch for sea lions, pelicans and marine birds that live in the channel. The ferry docks at Chacao, one of the island's oldest towns, where larch wood buildings and the 16th-century Church of San Antonio de Chacao sit around the Plaza de Armas.

From Chacao, the route moves to Caulín, an intertidal wetland where Black-necked Swans, Herons and Flamingos (in winter) feed year-round. Then comes Puñihuil beach, where you board a second boat for a 40-minute ride out to the islets where Magellanic and Humboldt penguins breed. The site is a National Monument for its ecological importance, and the guide explains why the island's isolation created both the wildlife and the mythology Chiloé is known for. The final stop is Ancud, the island's largest city, where you visit the Local Museum, the Municipal Market and the Fort of San Antonio: a historical complex built in the late 1700s as one of Spain's last fortifications in South America.

Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese and travels with you the whole day. The vehicle is air-conditioned and hotel drop-off is included at the end. The tour runs only between November and March, when penguin breeding season makes the colony accessible. Note that the boat ticket to the penguin islets is separate from the tour price, and churches close on Mondays.
