itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Hike and relax at hot springs

  • Hike 4 km to San José Volcano viewpoint
  • Enjoy views of San José Volcano
  • Drive 25-30 minutes to Baths de Colina
  • Relax in natural thermal pools

I didn’t expect the silence out there — it’s almost too big, you know? We left Santiago early, still half-asleep, but by the time we got close to Baños Colina I was wide awake. The mountains just sort of swallow you up. Our guide, Felipe, kept pointing out little things I’d have missed: old lava flows, a hawk circling above us. The air felt thinner at 2,500 meters — I caught myself stopping more than usual on the 4 km hike to the San José Volcano viewpoint. Not embarrassed though; everyone was huffing a bit and laughing about it.

The volcano itself is just there — not looming, but steady. Felipe told us it last erupted in 1960. I tried to imagine that kind of power under all this quiet rock. We sat for a while at the top; someone shared dried apricots and I swear they tasted better up there. It was cold enough that my breath came out in little clouds, but the sun felt warm on my face. Afterward we piled back into the van for maybe half an hour (I lost track), winding down to Baños Colina.

The hot springs are layered like steps, each pool a different temperature from the one above. The sulfur smell hit me first — not bad, just sharp — and steam drifted off the water in lazy spirals. Slipping into that heat after hiking felt like my bones were melting (in a good way). Someone poured wine and passed around sandwiches; we all looked ridiculous with flushed faces and wet hair but nobody cared. There was this moment when everything went quiet except for water trickling between pools and distant wind through the rocks. I still think about that sometimes.
