Day two is a full day in the Altiplanic Lagoons. You'll pass through Toconao village, then enter Los Flamencos National Reserve to see Chaxa Lagoon, where flamingos and migratory birds gather on salt crusts formed by evaporation. The route continues to Socaire, a small altiplanic settlement with a distinctive church, and then to Miscanti and Meñiques Lagoons—two bodies of intense blue water fed by underground rivers, surrounded by the Andes and the Meñiques Volcano. A one-hour hike along the southern Andes foothills takes you to Piedras Rojas (Talar Salt Flat), where natural oxidation has tinted the rocks red and orange. Later, you return to Moon Valley, a national reserve in one of the world's driest zones.
