The experience
You arrive at Pedro St. James knowing you have a free afternoon or a morning to spend on Caymanian history, and you want to skip the ticket line. The skip-the-line entry gets you straight in, and a live guide in English meets you to start the tour with a 3D film that walks you through the site's past, from its construction more than two centuries ago as a cotton plantation through its time as a courthouse, jail, and Government Assembly, to its restoration by the Cayman Islands government in 1996.
The 90-minute tour then moves into the Great House itself, the oldest surviving stone structure in the islands. You walk through the living museum, see the stamp collection and exhibitions, and absorb the artefacts that tell the story of the site's role in Caymanian life. On December 5, 1831, Pedro St. James hosted the meeting where the islands' first elected parliament was formed: the moment that earned it the name "birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands." Later, on May 3, 1835, the proclamation ending slavery in the British Empire was read from this same building.
The grounds spread across seven landscaped acres with panoramic ocean views, and the pace of the tour lets you take in both the building and the landscape. A gift shop and restaurant sit on site if you want to linger after the tour ends. Tours depart every hour between 9 am and 4 pm, so you can pick the time that fits the rest of your day.
