The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel, port or airport, then heads straight into Mindelo's center. You'll walk the colonial streets past the church and the municipal market, closed Sundays, then pass through Cesária Évora's house, the birthplace of Cape Verde's most famous singer. From the top of Fortin you get a panoramic view of the capital before the route follows Avenida Marginal down to Praia da Bote and the African market, where the first settlement took root. Along the way you meet locals and see the varieties of fish that anchor Cape Verdean cooking.

The tour then swings east across farmland and endemic plants through the green Calhau Valley to the fishing village of Salamansa, where the landscape shifts from cultivated to wild. Monte Verde Natural Park comes next. A high point where you can see across the entire island and photograph the other Cape Verde islands on the horizon. After a break for lunch at a local restaurant, the route moves to Baía das Gatas, where you walk through shallow lagoons, then on to the white sand dunes by the sea before returning to your accommodation.

Is this one for you?Choose the private tour if you want to set the pace and skip stops that don't interest you. The shared group tour keeps costs down and moves at a steady clip through all the main sites. Either way, the guide's local knowledge is what turns a drive around the island into a day of real encounters (at the market, the fishing village, the viewpoint) instead of a string of photo stops.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and French.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What's in Mindelo that makes it worth a full day?

Mindelo's colonial architecture, the church, the municipal market (closed Sundays), and Cesária Évora's house draw most visitors, but the real draw is the mix. You walk the old streets, meet locals at the market and fishing docks, and climb Fortin for a view of the whole capital and harbor.

Does the tour include time to swim?

Yes. The day ends at the white sand beaches by Baía das Gatas, where you can swim in the shallow lagoons and at the dunes before the drive back to your accommodation.

What should I bring for this tour?

Bring sandals or flip-flops, a towel, a hat, swimwear and sunscreen: the day moves between city streets, a valley drive, a hilltop viewpoint and beaches, so you'll need sun protection and gear for the water.

Can I book this as a private tour or does it run as a group?

You can choose between a private tour or a shared group tour at checkout. Both follow the same route and include the same pickup and drop-off.

Is lunch included in the tour price?

Lunch is arranged at a local restaurant during the day but is not included in the tour price. You pay separately for your meal.
