The experience
The day starts in Praia's main streets, where your guide points out the capital's economic and political landmarks as you drive. Depending on the ship's schedule, you stop at a small traditional market in a rural town to see how locals shop for fruit and vegetables: the everyday rhythm of the island away from the port. The route then climbs into the interior, passing through Serra Malagueta Natural Park at 800 meters altitude, where you get a photo stop to take in the volcanic mountains, deep valleys, and small houses clinging to the hillsides. This is one of Santiago's seven natural wonders, and the elevation shifts are sharp enough to feel them.
Assomada, the second-largest city on the island, sits in the north and interior. If you visit on a Wednesday or Saturday, the entire city fills with a large street market: a working market, not a tourist one, where you move through stalls and see how the island trades. From there the route heads to Tarrafal, a fishing village on the far north coast with one of the island's best beaches: white sand and clear water. You get free time here to swim or rest, and you can order a local lunch and a maracujá caipirinha if you want them. After eating, the drive back follows the east coast, passing fishing villages and stopping at a large banana and coconut plantation before returning to the ship.
Transport is air-conditioned throughout, and your guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of two other languages. You choose when you book. The operator handles pickup and drop-off at the cruise terminal, so you don't arrange a separate shuttle. The whole day is built around the ship's schedule, so you return in time to board.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the market in Assomada actually like?
Assomada's street market runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays and fills the entire city with stalls selling produce, goods and local items. It's a working market where islanders shop, not a tourist market, so you see the everyday commerce of the island and can move through the stalls at your own pace during the tour stop.
How much time do I get at Tarrafal beach?
Tarrafal's free time depends on the cruise ship's departure schedule, but the itinerary is built around giving you beach time at the fishing village. You can swim, rest on the white sand, or order a local lunch and drink if you want to stay longer.
What is Serra Malagueta Natural Park like?
Serra Malagueta sits at 800 meters altitude and shows the island's volcanic and mountainous landscape with striking elevation changes. You stop there to see the fauna and flora of Santiago and take photos of the deep valleys and small houses built into the hillsides. It's one of the seven natural wonders of the island.
Does the tour include lunch?
Lunch is not included in the tour price, but at Tarrafal beach you have the option to order a local lunch and a maracujá caipirinha during your free time there.
