The experience
The day starts in Goldstream Park, where a boardwalk and gravel path follow the Goldstream River through old-growth forest to a waterfall tucked into a small canyon. In fall, salmon migrate upstream to their spawning ground, and you can watch them move through the river. The walk is gentle and the forest surrounds you the whole way.
Next is the Malahat Skywalk, a 250-meter tower with a gentle sloped walkway that leads slowly to the top, where views open across the Saanich Inlet, peninsula and Salish Sea. The approach winds through Douglas fir and arbutus forest. On the way down, you can take a 7-story slide or walk the path back to a canteen and ice cream truck. Birds circle the tower throughout the day.
Before the final stop, you'll picnic on one of the nicest beaches around Victoria, with lunch picked up from Soul's Toast en route (they accommodate vegetarians and can arrange other dietary needs if you let them know ahead of time). Hatley Castle, built by the Dunsmuir family in the early 1900s as a Scottish-style residence, closes the day. The grounds include rose gardens, a native plant garden, Japanese gardens and Italian gardens, all set among old-growth giant trees. The castle appeared in X-Men and Deadpool films.
