The experience

You start at Huntingdon Manor and ride through Victoria's neighborhoods on a pedal-assist e-bike, stopping first at the British Columbia Parliament Buildings to hear the story of its architect. From there, the route takes you down to the Inner Harbour (the waterfront hub of shops, restaurants and attractions), then into Chinatown, where you walk Fan Tan Alley, the narrowest street in North America, lined with former opium and gambling dens now converted to shops and restaurants. Your guide walks you through the history of this second-oldest Chinatown in the world.

The ride climbs into Fernwood, a trendy neighborhood where the guide shares the area's story before you head toward Craigdarroch Castle. There you learn how a coal baron built the castle as a gift to his wife to convince her to leave Scotland for the West Coast, and what that ambition reveals about early British Columbia. You'll also stop at Government House to hear about the Lieutenant Governor's role and the volunteers who maintain the grounds, then ride through the elegant Rockland neighborhood on your way down to Beacon Hill Park.

In Beacon Hill Park, the guide introduces the Indigenous presence on Southern Vancouver Island: the Lekwungen First Nations, early Metis settlers, and the current urban Indigenous community. The tour ends back at the starting point, where you hand off your helmet and bike. The whole route stays on bike paths and streets, and the e-bike motor handles the hills so you can focus on the sights and stories.

What neighborhoods do you actually ride through on this Victoria e-bike tour?

Fernwood, Chinatown and the Rockland area are the main neighborhoods. You also pass through Beacon Hill Park and along the Inner Harbour waterfront. The route covers the historic core and residential streets that show how Victoria developed.

Is this tour hard on the legs, or does the e-bike do most of the work?

The e-bike has pedal assist, so the motor helps you up hills and through longer stretches. The operator notes you should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and riders must be 16 or older to operate the bike under BC law.

What is Craigdarroch Castle and why does the guide spend time there?

Craigdarroch Castle was built by a coal baron as a gift to his wife to persuade her to move from Scotland to the West Coast. The stop gives you insight into the early days of British Columbia and how wealthy settlers tried to recreate English society in the new province.

How long is the whole tour, and what time does it start?

The tour runs 2.5 hours and departs at either 10:00am or 1:30pm, both in English. You'll need to book at least two people per reservation.

What does the guide tell you about Fan Tan Alley?

Fan Tan Alley is the narrowest street in North America and sits in the heart of Chinatown. It was lined with opium and gambling dens in the 1800s and early 1900s. Today those buildings house trendy shops and restaurants, and you walk through it as part of the tour.
