The Experience

The forest closes in around you the moment you step onto the elevated walkway. Six hundred metres of it winds through the canopy of Arbutus and Douglas Firs, and the trees are so close you can see the papery red bark peeling off the Arbutus trunks, the way the wood underneath glows chartreuse in the light. You're already high up, but you're not at the top yet. The spiral ramp keeps climbing.

Then the tower opens up. At 250 metres above sea level, the views stop being a view and become a geography lesson you didn't know you needed. Mt. Baker sits in the distance, the Saanich Peninsula spreads below, and on a clear day you're looking at islands in two countries. The 360-degree sightlines mean there's no bad angle — turn and there's another layer of water, another ridge, another reason to stay up here longer than you planned. The Malahat SkyWalk sits just 35 minutes from Victoria, which means you can do this without eating a whole day, but most people linger anyway.

Coming down is where it gets fun. You can walk the spiral ramp back the way you came, or you can take the spiral slide — 20 metres of it, fast enough that you'll want to go again. The café at ground level has hot and cold drinks and snacks if you need to decompress after. Parking is included, and the whole site is wheelchair accessible, so the only thing you're arranging is when to show up.
