The Experience

The day starts at Campbell River marina, where you board a covered vessel with a heated cabin and onboard washroom. The 2.5-hour crossing to Toba Inlet is not just transit—your naturalist guide provides commentary while you watch for whales, dolphins, and sea lions moving through the water. The inlet itself is a fjord ringed by mountains, with jade-green glacial water and waterfalls dropping from the cliffs.

Once you arrive, lunch waits on the dock before your Indigenous guides from the Klahoose First Nation meet you. You then board a van to travel along the inlet's rivers and reach the viewing platforms. For approximately three hours, you stand at these platforms and watch grizzly bears catching salmon during the annual run. The bears fish the same rivers year after year; the platforms keep you at a safe distance while the bears go about their work.

After bear viewing, you return to the boat for the journey back to Campbell River, with another window to spot coastal wildlife. The full day runs eight to nine hours from start to finish. Bottled water, snacks, coffee and tea are included throughout; lunch is provided on the dock.
