The Experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup in downtown St. John's, then moves through the city's most recognizable spots. You'll drive past Jellybean Row—the brightly coloured houses that have become one of the most photographed sights in Newfoundland—and pass George Street, known for its concentration of pubs and bars. The narrated drive introduces the history and culture of the capital while the guide points out what makes each neighbourhood distinct.

Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site comes next, the oldest lighthouse in Newfoundland and the easternmost point in North America. You explore the historic structure and stand at the edge of the Atlantic, looking out over the rugged coastline. From there, the tour moves to Signal Hill National Historic Site, where Cabot Tower sits atop the hill commemorating John Cabot's voyage and the site of the first transatlantic wireless signal. The panoramic views from Signal Hill overlook both the city and the harbour, and you have time to take in the scale of the landscape. A drive through Quidi Vidi Village, a charming fishing community with colourful homes and a scenic harbour, rounds out the land portion of the day.

The second half is the Iceberg Quest boat cruise, an award-winning tour that takes you out along the coastline. From the water you see Cape Spear and Cabot Tower from a different angle, and Fort Amherst comes into view. The boat searches for humpback whales and the massive ancient icebergs drifting through the Atlantic. Iceberg season typically runs May–June and whale season peaks mid-June to mid-August; sightings vary each year and are not guaranteed, but the cruise itself is the reason you're on the water.
