experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me when we walked into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame was the faint smell of polished wood floors—reminded me of old gymnasiums. Our guide, Mike, greeted us with a big smile and pointed out the wall lined with signed jerseys from athletes I’d only ever seen on TV. He shared how some of these folks grew up just down the road, which made their stories feel even more real.

We wandered through the Portraits Gallery, where you can get surprisingly close to hand-painted images—some faces I recognized from local news clippings as a kid. The interactive sports simulator was a hit with my nephew; he tried his hand at virtual hockey and got pretty competitive (the sound of pucks hitting the screen is oddly satisfying). In the Biomechanics Centre, there’s this hands-on display where you can test your reaction time—my score wasn’t great, but it gave us all a laugh.

The Virtual Locker Room has old gear you can touch and try on. There’s something about holding a worn-out baseball glove that makes you think about all the games it’s seen. We ended up chatting with another visitor who remembered seeing one of the Hall inductees play back in the ’80s—small town vibes for sure. The whole place is wheelchair accessible and easy to get around, even if you’ve got a stroller or service animal along.
