The Experience

I never thought I’d ride through Niagara-on-the-Lake in a classic English cab, but there we were—windows down, the countryside rolling past, and our driver (Paul, who grew up around here) pointing out old stone houses and telling us which ones had the best holiday lights. The air smelled like cut grass and something sweet from the vineyards. First stop was Reif Estate Winery—one of the oldest around—and even though I’ve done tastings before, this felt different. At the second winery, I tried an icewine that tasted like apricots and cold mornings. I probably made a face—our guide laughed and said most people do on their first sip. Lunch showed up as these picnic baskets with sandwiches better than any picnic I’ve ever packed myself (I still think about that bread). We ate outside under some trees while a couple of locals debated which year’s vintage was “actually drinkable,” which made me feel like maybe wine people are just regular people after all.

The last two stops blurred together a bit—lots of laughter, someone’s dog running between the vines, my friend trying to pronounce “Gewürztraminer” (she gave up). The family-run place at the end had two brothers pouring samples; one told stories about his dad learning winemaking from scratch.
