Step into untouched wilderness and alpine lakes beyond the ski resort boundary

A guided backcountry hike in the Skoki wilderness near Lake Louise, accessed by van shuttle that bypasses the standard fire road entry. You hike through forests, alpine meadows and past turquoise lakes with a professional interpretive guide who shares local stories; the day runs eight hours and includes lunch, water and hotel pickup from selected accommodations. Minimum age is 12, and a high level of physical fitness is required.

The Experience

The van shuttle up Lake Louise Fire Road is the difference here. Instead of walking a 9km return fire road to reach the Skoki Backcountry trailhead, you ride to the edge of the ski area boundary and start your hike already deep in the wilderness. That saves the flat, repetitive approach and puts you straight into the terrain that matters—forests, mountain creeks, wildflower fields and the high alpine lakes nestled among glacier-clad peaks. A professional interpretive guide leads the hike and brings stories about the landscape and the wildlife you might see along the way.

The day runs eight hours total. You'll hike through the backcountry with turquoise lakes and clear streams as the landscape changes around you. Lunch is included—a turkey sandwich (or roast beef, ham and cheese, or veggie if you let them know ahead of time), granola bar, fruit, bottled water and a soft drink or juice. The guide carries everything, so you pack light and focus on the terrain underfoot.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included from selected hotels, and the driver is part of the team. Bring hiking boots or shoes, dress in layers for mountain weather, and pack a rain jacket. This hike demands a high level of cardiovascular fitness; it's not recommended for travelers with poor heart health. Confirm your hotel pickup time and location when you book, and let them know your sandwich choice.

Top questions

What is the Skoki Backcountry and why does the van shuttle matter?

The Skoki Backcountry is a wilderness area hidden behind Lake Louise Ski Resort, normally reached only by hiking a 9km fire road first. The van shuttle takes you directly to the trailhead at the ski area boundary, so you skip the flat approach and start your hike already in the pristine backcountry with forests, alpine lakes and mountain views.

How long is the hike itself, and what will I see?

The full day runs eight hours including the van ride. You hike through forests, along mountain creeks and wildflower fields to reach turquoise high alpine lakes surrounded by glacier-clad peaks. The guide points out wildlife and shares local stories as you move through the landscape.

What's included in the lunch?

Lunch includes a sandwich (turkey, roast beef, ham and cheese, or veggie—you choose when you book), a granola bar, fruit, and bottled water or a soft drink or juice. The guide carries it all, so you don't pack food.

Do I need special fitness or gear for this hike?

Yes—you need a high level of physical fitness and it's not recommended if you have poor cardiovascular health. Bring hiking boots or shoes, dress in layers, and pack a rain jacket. The minimum age is 12 years old.

How does hotel pickup work?

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included from selected hotels in the Lake Louise area. When you book, confirm your hotel location and pickup time with the operator, and let them know your sandwich preference for lunch.
