You’ll saddle up at Boundary Ranch for a gentle 1-hour horseback ride along the Buffalo Loop in Kananaskis. With a local guide leading the way, you’ll pass buffalo paddocks, wind through peaceful forest trails, and maybe spot wildlife like deer or squirrels. It’s slow-paced and welcoming—even if you’ve never ridden before—and leaves you with that calm feeling only horses seem to bring.
I didn’t expect to smell pine that strong, honestly. We’d just started out from Boundary Ranch, and already my horse’s ears were twitching at every little sound in the trees. Our guide—her name was Jess, she had this patient way of talking—kept checking in with everyone, making sure we were comfortable before we really got moving. I’d never been on a horse before, so I was kind of nervous about embarrassing myself, but it turns out you mostly just let the horse do its thing and try not to overthink it.
The Buffalo Loop isn’t long—just about an hour—but it feels like you’re further out than you really are. There was this moment when we passed the buffalo paddock (the bull looked at us like he knew something we didn’t), and Jess told us how they keep track of the calves born each spring. I tried to count them but lost track after three because one wandered off behind its mom. The air was cool, even though it was June, and there was this soft crunch under the horses’ hooves that made everything feel slower somehow.
We spotted a squirrel darting across the path—my horse barely noticed but I jumped a little. Someone behind me laughed; I think it broke the ice for all of us first-timers. Sometimes Jess would point out animal tracks or stop so we could listen for elk (didn’t hear any, but I liked pretending). It’s not dramatic scenery or anything—it’s just quiet woods, bits of sun through branches, and the steady breathing of your horse. That stuck with me more than I expected.
