Paddle Class 3 rapids and take The Whopper wave head-on

Class 3 whitewater rafting on Sunwapta River in Jasper National Park with a live guide, all equipment and transportation from the townsite included. The trip starts calm to build your paddling skills, then moves into the rapids and ends with a full facial from The Whopper, a locally renowned wave. Minimum age is 12; no prior experience required, though moderate fitness helps.

The Experience

Sunwapta River is the only Class 3 run in Jasper National Park, and the trip builds in intensity. You start in calm water where the guide helps you dial in your paddling technique before the river picks up. Once the rapids arrive, you're ready—the guide leads you through the whitewater while your raft cuts through the current. All equipment is provided: paddle, helmet, life jacket, and a wetsuit or splash gear depending on the water temperature. You arrive 60 minutes before departure to get fitted and briefed, then head to the river.

The finale is The Whopper, a locally renowned wave that delivers a full facial—a wave so big it washes over the boat and everyone in it. It's the signature moment of the run, and the guide positions the raft to take it head-on. Your driver shoots photos at several spots along the river, so you don't need to bring a camera or phone on the water. Pictures are ready on a memory stick at the end and available to purchase directly from the driver or at the shop afterward.

Transportation picks you up and drops you off at designated meeting points in Jasper townsite. The whole outing runs about four hours from start to finish. Wear your bathing suit or t-shirt and shorts under regular clothes—everything else is supplied. The guide speaks English or French depending on the group.
