Whitewater Rafting on Fraser River, Jasper: Class-3 Rapids
Class-3 rapids, a waterfall portage, and two hours on the Fraser River in the shadow of Mount Robson
Whitewater rafting on the Fraser River near Jasper takes you down Class-3 rapids with a certified guide, all technical equipment, and round-trip bus transfers from Downtown Jasper. The 5-hour outing includes 2 hours of active rafting, a short land portage around Rearguard Falls, and a safety briefing at the launch point near Mount Robson; participants must be at least 12 years old and weigh a minimum of 90 lbs. You choose between a 10am or 1pm departure.
The Experience
You're picked up from Downtown Jasper and driven by bus to the launch point near Mount Robson Provincial Park. A certified river guide meets you there and walks through the safety briefing in the shadow of the mountain, then issues all the technical gear—wetsuits, neoprene booties, spray jackets, helmets and lifejackets. Dress in your swimsuit under street clothes so you're ready to get on the water fast.
The raft launches into the Fraser River and you paddle through sections of turbulent Class-3 rapids and swirling eddies, surrounded by steep canyon walls and the Canadian Rockies backdrop. Midway downriver, you pull ashore for a short land portage around the impressive Rearguard Falls, then rejoin the raft at its base and continue through more whitewater. Watch for wildlife and seasonal spawning salmon along the way. The guide handles the raft's overall direction and maneuvers, but you're actively paddling and part of the crew.
The full outing is 5 hours round-trip from Downtown Jasper, with 2 hours of actual rafting time. This trip runs in all weather; on cooler days, bring a fleece or wool layer to wear under the spray jacket. Check in 15 minutes before your departure time at the parking lot across the street from the Shell gas station in Downtown Jasper. Souvenir photos are available to purchase after the run.

What are Class-3 rapids like for someone who's never rafted before?
Class-3 rapids are intermediate-level whitewater—turbulent and wet with plenty of adrenaline, but manageable for all experience levels. The guide is certified and highly experienced, and you'll receive instruction and safety briefing before launching, so first-timers are welcome.
What's the Rearguard Falls portage and how long does it add to the day?
Rearguard Falls is an impressive waterfall midway downriver that you can't paddle through. You pull the raft ashore, carry it a short distance around the falls on land, then rejoin the river at the base and continue rafting. It's a brief break built into the 2 hours of active rafting time.
Do I need to bring my own swimsuit and what else should I pack?
Yes, wear a swimsuit under your street clothes so you can change quickly at the launch point. Bring warm clothing for after the trip, a drink and snack for afterward, and on cooler days add a fleece or wool jacket to layer under the spray jacket—no cotton. All technical rafting gear including wetsuits and helmets is provided.
What time should I arrive for check-in, and which departure time works better?
Check in 15 minutes before your departure time at the parking lot across the street from the Shell gas station in Downtown Jasper. You choose between a 10am or 1pm tour; both are the same 5-hour round-trip experience, so pick whichever fits your schedule.
Are there age or weight requirements, and can my kids come along?
Participants must be at least 12 years old and weigh a minimum of 90 lbs (41 kg). Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult on the raft.
What wildlife might I see on the Fraser River?
The Fraser River corridor is home to abundant wildlife, and depending on the season, you may spot spawning salmon. The guide will point out what's visible along the canyon walls and riverbanks during your paddle.
