Raft 15 km of the Athabasca Canyon in an afternoon without arranging transport or gear

A 3-hour white water rafting trip on the Athabasca River near Jasper starts at the base of Athabasca Falls and runs 15 km down the canyon through moderate rapids and flat sections where you see the river valley from the water. A professional guide leads the group, all rafting gear is provided, and pickup and drop-off from designated meeting points in town are included. Children from age 6 can join with an adult, and the trip suits all fitness levels.

The Experience

The day starts with a 30-minute bus ride from town to the put-in point. Once there, you'll suit up in your rafting gear and get a safety talk from your guide before a short 5-minute walk down to the river. The whole setup — wetsuit, helmet, life jacket, paddle — comes with you; you just show up in your bathing suit under your clothes and bring a towel for the bus ride back.

The river trip itself covers 15 km and lasts around three hours. You start seconds into the first set of rapids, which soak everyone in the raft right away, then enter the canyon proper. For the next 30 minutes you move through a mix of moderate rapids and calmer sections where you can actually look around — the canyon walls and Athabasca Valley unfold only from the water, and wildlife often appears along the banks. The trip ends with another set of rapids and views back down the valley before you return to the highway. From there it's about 20 minutes back to town.

Your guide provides live commentary throughout and handles all the technical calls on the water. The whole group stays small enough that everyone gets attention, and the pace mixes action with moments to take in the scenery. Guides work in English and French, so language is not a barrier.

Top questions

What's the Athabasca River Canyon like when you're actually on the water?

The canyon walls rise around you as you move through moderate rapids and flat sections together. The scenery — the valley, the rock formations, the surrounding peaks — is visible only from the river itself, and you'll see it over roughly 30 minutes of the three-hour trip while the guide points out wildlife and natural features along the banks.

Do I need to bring my own wetsuit or other gear?

All rafting gear is provided: wetsuit, helmet, life jacket and paddle come with the trip. Wear your bathing suit underneath your regular clothes, bring a towel for the bus ride, and bring water to drink. That's all you need to pack.

Can my kids come on this trip?

Children from age 6 can join, and they must be accompanied by an adult. The trip is suitable for all fitness levels, so age and ability are the only factors — no special training is required.

How does the pickup work from Jasper?

Pickup and drop-off happen from designated meeting points in town, with the primary location at the RV Parking Lot. Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time, and the bus will return you to town about 20 minutes after the river trip ends.

What happens if I arrive late or need to cancel?

Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time. If you arrive after the bus leaves or don't show for your booked date and time, there is no refund. Double-check your confirmation for the exact date, time and pickup location before your trip.
