Four hours on horseback through Banff's valley, river crossings, and mountain views

A 4-hour horseback ride through Banff National Park led by a cowboy guide, for riders with previous experience. You saddle up at the corrals, cross the Spray River twice, pass the base of Mount Rundle and Rimrock Resort, and stop for a snack partway through. The ride ends at Bow Falls before heading back to the start.

The experience

This ride is built around previous riding experience. You're operating the horse, not watching scenery from a vehicle. After meeting your guide and getting a safety briefing at the corrals, you'll spend the next four hours in the saddle. The route takes you down into the valley, across the Spray River, along the base of Mount Rundle, and past the Rimrock Resort Hotel and the fairways of Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course. A short break with a small snack comes partway through, then you'll cross the river a second time at Bow Falls before the ride back.

What makes this different from a shorter trail ride is the pace. Four hours lets the guide move at a relaxed tempo that feels closer to how early settlers would have traveled through the park. You'll see the park from 6 or 7 feet up from the horse's back, a vantage point that changes what you notice. The route is fixed, so you know the stops and the river crossings ahead of time. Helmets are mandatory, long pants and sturdy closed-toe shoes are required, and you need to arrive 30 minutes before your start time to get outfitted.

What’s included

  • Use of a horse.
  • basic horseback riding instruction.
  • a helmet (mandatory).
  • a small snack during the break.
  • lead and tail guides throughout the ride.
