The Experience

The tour starts in the Halifax Public Gardens, the oldest Victorian gardens in Canada, where your guide walks you through the main gates and explains the history and monuments inside before giving you time to explore on your own. From there the route takes you to the Old Burying Ground, Halifax's oldest cemetery founded in 1749, where restored headstones and the only Crimean War memorial in North America mark the stories of those laid to rest.

You walk to the top of Citadel Hill for a commanding view of downtown and the harbour, where the guide explains Halifax's role as a military establishment—the tour does not go inside the Citadel National Historic Site itself. The route then passes the Old Town Clock, one of Halifax's most recognizable landmarks, built in 1803 to keep the local garrison on time. At Grand Parade, the guide stops to talk about the cenotaph, the Halifax City Hall at the north end, and St. Paul's Church at the south end, using this central square to explain the Halifax Explosion and the wars it commemorates.

Province House, constructed between 1817 and 1819, is Canada's longest-serving legislative building and one of the finest examples of Palladian architecture in North America. Your guide covers the 1835 court case that established freedom of the press in Canada and the people who governed Nova Scotia from this building.
