The Experience

So you're standing at the base and the Red Skyride is right there — or the newer Blue Grouse Gondola if you prefer — and either way you're about to ride straight up the forested slope in something like six or seven minutes. The whole thing is steep enough that you watch the city shrink below you: the harbour, the ships, the Strait of Georgia, even Vancouver Island if the light is right. It's not a long ride, but it's the kind of ride that makes you understand why people come back to Grouse Mountain over and over.

Once you're at the Peak Chalet, the day splits depending on the season. Summer means the grizzly bear habitat is open — two resident bears that the rangers know by name and habit — and the Lumberjack Show runs on a schedule, and there's a Birds in Motion Demonstration if you time it right. You can ride the Peak Chairlift higher still, or walk the Eco Walk through the forested trails and catch a ranger talk about what you're seeing. Winter flips the whole thing: the Light Walk winds through the mountain at night, the sliding zone opens up, there's an outdoor skating pond, and snowshoe trails if you want to move deeper into the quiet. Skates, sleds and snowshoes are all available to rent up there, so you don't have to bring your own.

The Peak Chalet itself is worth the ride alone — it's got dining options, a Theatre in the Sky for when the weather turns, and two gift shops if you need to grab something you forgot or just want a souvenir. The whole ticket is round-trip on whichever gondola you choose, so you're not figuring out logistics on the way down. Just ride back. In summer, there's also a free shuttle from Canada Place starting mid-May if you want to skip the drive north from downtown Vancouver entirely.

One thing to know: most of the outdoor activities are seasonal, and they do close or shift hours depending on the day and the weather, so it's worth checking the Grouse Mountain website before you go to see what's actually running. The mountain operates in all weather, which is good — it means you're not stuck — but it also means you should dress for whatever the peak is throwing at you, not what downtown felt like.
