The Experience
The coach is already rolling when you board at the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre, climbing toward the Skywalk on a scenic transfer that takes about eight to ten minutes. You're heading to a 1,312-foot-long walkway that juts nearly 100 feet out into the air, suspended above Sunwapta Valley with Alberta's glacier-carved peaks rising all around you. The whole thing is presented as you walk — interpretive stops along the way that connect the landscape to what you're actually seeing, not just a platform you cross and leave.
The real moment comes at the end, where the observation platform sits almost 1,000 feet above the valley floor. The glass bottom is the thing that makes it work; you're standing on it, looking straight down through 280 meters of air to the terrain below. Waterfalls, wildlife, fossils — they're all part of the story the walkway tells as you move through it, but the view is what stays with you. The platform itself is wheelchair accessible, and the whole route is designed so that people of any fitness level can do it at their own pace.
Before or after, the Discovery Centre has a cafeteria, dining room and gift shop if you need to eat or grab something to take home. Children five and under get in free, and infants can ride in a pram or stroller the whole way. The coach ride back is included, so you don't have to think about how to get down — just walk, look, and let the transfer handle the rest.
