The Experience

I never thought I’d end up wearing a cowboy hat in downtown Calgary, but there I was—sweaty from the sun, dust on my jeans, clutching my souvenir program like it was a map to some secret. The first afternoon started with that familiar festival buzz—kids darting around, the smell of fried dough mixing with horses somewhere close by. Our seats for the rodeo were right near the action; you could feel the thud of hooves through the stands. I kept flinching every time a bull burst out of the gate (I’m not proud). The announcer’s voice boomed over everything, but you could still hear people laughing and shouting advice at riders. I think my favorite part was just watching everyone’s faces—locals in boots and tourists like me trying to look like we belonged.

The next evening felt totally different—cooler air, city lights coming on as we crossed Stampede Park on that WestJet Skyride (which is way higher than it looks from below). My friend tried to wave at everyone; I just gripped the bar and pretended not to be nervous. When fireworks finally went off above us, it felt like half the city had stopped to watch.

It’s those little moments—the dusty sunlight during barrel racing, or seeing families dance near Elbow River Camp—that stuck with me most.
