The Experience
Li was already waiting outside our hotel in Calgary—big grin, coffee in hand. He asked if we’d ever seen mountains like this before. I said no, not really, and he just laughed: “Wait until you see Lake Louise.” The van smelled faintly of pine (or maybe it was someone’s hiking boots), and there were only five of us. Felt like a road trip with new friends more than a tour. We passed through Canmore first for a quick caffeine fix—tiny bakery, locals chatting in that slow Alberta way. It was still early and the light was kind of soft on the peaks.
The Banff Gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain was smoother than I expected—I kept thinking my legs would be burning if I’d hiked it instead. At the top, you get this 360-degree sweep of Banff below—clouds drifting so close you could almost touch them. Li pointed out Bow Falls down in the valley (he called it “the spot for dramatic selfies,” which made me laugh). There’s something about that cold air up there; it stings your nose but wakes you up too. We took turns taking photos for each other—no awkwardness, just people trying to capture something they probably can’t explain back home.
Lake Louise came later and honestly? The color is real—it’s not some Instagram filter thing. I dipped my fingers in; freezing even in June. Some folks went further along the shore while others just sat quietly watching the glacier reflection shift as clouds moved overhead. Li told us about how squirrels here are basically tiny bandits (“Don’t leave snacks out!”) and I swear one tried to steal my granola bar when I wasn’t looking. We didn’t make it to Moraine Lake since it was still closed for the season, but that didn’t feel like a loss somehow—the day felt full enough.
We ended wandering Banff Avenue—a bit touristy but lively, with people from everywhere mixing with locals who all seem to know each other by name. Picked up some fudge (no regrets) and ducked into a gallery just because it started drizzling outside. By the time we got back to Calgary I was tired in that good way you get after a real day out—not sure if it was the mountain air or just feeling like we’d actually lived a little bit of Banff instead of just ticking off sights.
