Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Big Canoe Wildlife Tour on Bow River

  • Meet at Banff, Alberta
  • Board 12-seat canoe
  • Paddle along Bow River
  • Listen to guide's wildlife stories
  • Spot elk, bald eagles, beavers
  • Learn wildlife encounter best practices
  • Enjoy scenic river views

Ever wondered what it’s like to paddle through Banff’s wild heart while the town’s just a faint hum behind you? I didn’t expect to feel so small out there on the Bow River — not in a bad way, more like you’re part of something old and steady. Our guide, Jamie, handed out paddles and life jackets (I fumbled with mine — apparently backwards is possible) before we all climbed into this long, sturdy canoe that somehow fit twelve of us without feeling crowded.

The light was that soft gold you only get in early evening. You could smell wet pine needles and something earthy from the riverbanks. Jamie kept pointing out animal tracks in the mud — elk, muskrat, maybe even Barry (the local beaver celebrity). We got quiet every time we drifted past a likely spot. Once, someone whispered “look!” and sure enough, there was a bald eagle up on a snag. The silence after that felt almost respectful — or maybe we were all just holding our breath.

I’m not much of a paddler but nobody cared if you splashed a bit or lagged behind; it’s not about racing. Jamie told us about how wildlife here has to adapt with all the visitors around now — I hadn’t thought about that before. There was this moment when the water went glassy and all you could hear was our paddles dipping in sync. I still think about that view sometimes, honestly.
