A road trip that trades highway speed for three stops most taxis skip

A private taxi transfer from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap includes three stops along the route: Skuon's Spider Market, the ancient Spean Praptos bridge built in the 12th century, and Kompong Khleang floating village on Tonle Sap Lake, where you board a wooden boat to see stilt houses and mangrove forest. The journey takes around 8 hours with an English-speaking driver, hotel or airport pickup, and your choice of vehicle size from sedan to 20-seater bus.

Phnom Penh to Siem Reap with stops

  • Depart Phnom Penh by private taxi
  • Stop at Spider Market in Skuon
  • Visit ancient Dragon Bridge at Kampong Kdei
  • Explore floating village of Kompong Khleang by boat
  • Arrive in Siem Reap

The experience

Most travelers drive straight from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap in silence. This transfer stops three times, and each one changes what you see of Cambodia. Skuon, known locally as Spiderville, is where the market sells fried tarantula, crickets, scorpions and grasshoppers. You can taste them or skip the insects and photograph the stalls and seasonal fruit vendors instead. The stop is short, but it is the only place most tourists ever encounter this part of Cambodian food culture.

The second stop is Kampong Kdei, where Spean Praptos, the Dragon Bridge, crosses the landscape with over 20 arches. Built in the 12th century as part of the ancient Angkor road network, it stands in good condition and gives a concrete sense of Khmer engineering at a scale most visitors never reach. From there, the route continues to Kompong Khleang, one of the largest floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake. You transfer to a wooden boat and move through stilt houses, mangrove forest, and the daily life of a community where animals and people share the same narrow waterways. During the dry season (January to June), water levels drop and the channels narrow, slowing the boat and revealing how villagers adapt when the lake recedes.

The vehicle is private and air-conditioned, with your choice of sedan, SUV, minivan or larger bus depending on group size. Your driver speaks English, handles fuel and tolls, and includes a coffee and bathroom break en route. Hotel or airport pickup is built in, and the whole journey runs around 8 hours. You choose which floating village to visit (Kompong Khleang or Kompong Phluk) when you book.

Is this one for you?Book this transfer if you want to see how Cambodians live between the two cities rather than drive straight through. The stops add time but replace empty highway hours with three concrete moments (a market, a bridge, a floating village) that most point-to-point taxis skip entirely. Choose your floating village (Kompong Khleang or Kompong Phluk) when you book, and pick your vehicle size based on whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, or with a group.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (1 to 11 years).

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the Spider Market in Skuon actually like?

Skuon's market sells live and fried insects including tarantula, crickets, scorpions and grasshoppers, alongside seasonal local fruits. It is a working market where Cambodian and foreign travelers stop to eat or photograph. Tasting is optional.

Can I see the Spean Praptos bridge up close, or is it just a drive-by?

Spean Praptos is a scheduled stop where you get out and walk around the bridge. The 12th-century structure has over 20 arches and sits in good condition. The stop gives you time to photograph and explore it on foot.

How does the floating village work in the dry season?

From January to June, water levels on Tonle Sap Lake drop and the channels narrow, slowing the boat and making the waterways shallower. Stilt houses that sit 8 meters above water in the rainy season sit only 1 to 2 meters above it then, and you see daily village life adapted to the lower water: a different perspective than the wet season offers.

Do I have to eat insects at Skuon, or can I skip that part?

Tasting insects is entirely optional. The Spider Market stop is short and works just as well for photographs, local fruit, and watching the market itself if you prefer not to eat.

What size vehicle will I be in?

You choose your vehicle type at checkout: sedan, SUV (Lexus, Highlander, Toyota Alphard), minivan (Grand Starex, Toyota Hyundai), or 20-seater bus. The vehicle is private, air-conditioned, and sized to your group.
