The experience
Oudong sits about an hour north of Phnom Penh and was the seat of Khmer power for nearly 250 years before the capital moved south. The tour picks you up from your hotel and stops first at Phnom Praset, where an 8th-century temple and reclining Buddha sit above plains and rice fields. From there the route continues to Oudong itself, where three hills rise above the landscape with stupas visible from miles away.
The afternoon centers on climbing the 500 steps that connect the three hilltops. Each carries temples and stupas. The largest hold the remains of King Monivong (who ruled 1927–1941) and King Ang Duong (1845–1859). The walk is steep and the steps are real exercise, but the countryside views open up as you climb. A memorial on the site marks where the Khmer Rouge made their final stand against the Vietnamese army in 1979, a detail that shapes how many travelers understand what they are walking through.
Your guide speaks English and knows the history of each site. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as are entrance tickets and bottled water. You'll have time to eat lunch on your own in Oudong. The tour does not include a meal. The whole day runs five to six hours.
