The experience
If you have a full day free in Siem Reap and want to move beyond the main Angkor temples, this tour reaches two sites most visitors miss. Kbal Spean sits about 50 km northeast on the Kulen Mountains' southwestern slopes, hidden inside a tropical forest. The hike in is moderately challenging (1.5 km uphill on rocky, uneven ground), but the payoff is immediate: hundreds of lingas carved directly into the sandstone riverbed, carved between the 11th and 13th centuries when the site served as a sacred Hindu sanctuary. Water flowing from the mountain was believed to be blessed here before continuing downstream to Angkor. The forest itself fills the hike: tall trees, rock formations, birds, butterflies, and seasonal wildflowers make the trail as much about the landscape as the archaeology.
After the hike, you move to Banteay Srei, a smaller temple but one of Cambodia's greatest treasures. Built from pink sandstone instead of the gray stone used at most Angkor temples, it allowed artisans to carve exceptionally delicate details that have survived over a thousand years. Every doorway, lintel, pediment and column carries intricate floral patterns, mythical creatures and scenes from Hindu mythology. Your guide walks you through the carvings and the stories behind them, and because the tour is private, you set the pace and ask questions without feeling rushed.
The day runs 7 to 8 hours total. You travel in a private air-conditioned minivan with your English-speaking guide, and complimentary bottled water is provided throughout. Pickup is included, so you don't arrange transport separately.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (1 to 14 years): free; Infant (under 1): free.
What is Kbal Spean and why is it called the River of a Thousand Lingas?
Kbal Spean is a sacred archaeological site in the tropical forest northeast of Siem Reap where hundreds of lingas, Hindu symbols, were carved directly into the sandstone riverbed between the 11th and 13th centuries. The site was developed as a sanctuary where water from the Kulen Mountain was believed to be blessed before flowing downstream to Angkor.
How difficult is the hike to Kbal Spean?
The hike is 1.5 km uphill on a forest trail with rocky and uneven sections, making it moderately challenging. It is suitable for travelers with a reasonable level of fitness, and the operator notes the tour works for all physical fitness levels.
What makes Banteay Srei different from the other temples in the Angkor region?
Banteay Srei is built from pink sandstone rather than the gray stone or laterite used at most Angkor temples. This softer material allowed artisans to create exceptionally delicate and intricate carvings (floral patterns, mythical creatures, and scenes from Hindu mythology) that remain remarkably well preserved after more than a thousand years.
Can I take photos at both sites?
Yes. The private format means you can take plenty of photos without feeling rushed, and your guide will point out the details worth capturing at both Kbal Spean and Banteay Srei.
What is included in the tour price?
The tour includes an English-speaking guide, round-trip transport in a private air-conditioned minivan, complimentary bottled water throughout the day, and hotel pickup. Entrance fees to the sites are not included.
