The experience

Without public transport to the temples, a private tour is the practical way to see Angkor. You get picked up at your downtown hotel or guesthouse in an air-conditioned minivan or bus, and the driver takes you straight to the complex. Your guide meets you there and walks you through Angkor Thom first. The walled capital city where you'll stand at the Southern Gate, then move through the Bayon with its famous carved stone faces, the three-tiered Baphuon temple, and the Terrace of the Elephants, where King Jayavarman VII once reviewed his army from the platform.

After Angkor Thom, you head to Ta Prohm, the temple left partly overgrown with massive tree roots still wrapped around the stones: the one used as a backdrop for the Tomb Raider film. Lunch happens at a local restaurant with a vegetarian option, and you'll have a chance to visit a nearby village where locals make palm cake and palm sugar by hand. In the afternoon, you move to Angkor Wat itself, the largest religious building on earth and the centerpiece of Khmer civilization. Built in the 12th century and dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, it's ringed by a giant moat and topped with five towers that appear on the Cambodian flag. The bas-reliefs covering the walls are the longest in the world, and if you climb to the top, you can see the dense jungle spreading out in every direction.

The day ends at Phnom Bakheng, a mountain temple where you watch the sunset before the driver takes you back to Siem Reap. The whole tour runs about ten hours. You'll have water and cold towels throughout the day, and your guide (experienced and English-speaking) adjusts their pace and detail to what interests you.
