The experience
How do you fit Angkor Wat and the Tonlé Sap into one trip from Phnom Penh without a second night in the capital? This tour bundles the drive north, the lake visit and the temple complex into back-to-back days, so you see both in a single overnight away. A private air-conditioned car picks you up from your Phnom Penh hotel and carries you the full route. Your English-speaking driver handles navigation, stops and timing.
Day one is the journey itself. You leave Phnom Penh heading northeast toward Siem Reap, but the route includes three stops that turn the drive into a day of its own. At Skun, known locally as Spiderville, you can taste fried tarantula and other insects at the market, or simply browse the stalls and seasonal fruit from the Mekong islands if you prefer to skip the insects. Next comes Kampong Kdei, where you walk out to the Dragon Bridge, a 12th-century Angkor-era stone structure with over 20 arches that still stands in good condition. Then the route reaches Kompong Khleang, one of the largest villages on the Tonlé Sap Lake. You board a wooden boat and drift through the flooded mangrove forest, passing stilt houses that rise 8 meters above water in the dry season but sit just 1 or 2 meters above it when the rains come. The village itself (animals, humans, pigs, chickens and ducks all sharing the same floating space) shows a way of life that exists nowhere else in the region.
Day two begins at 4:45am at your hotel. The drive to Angkor Wat takes about an hour, and you arrive in time to watch the sunrise over the largest religious building in the world. Built in the 12th century as a temple and mausoleum for King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat sits at the heart of the Khmer temple complex and is the best preserved of all the Angkorian temples. After sunrise and a return to the hotel for breakfast and rest, you visit Ta Prohm (the jungle temple overgrown with massive tree roots and vines), then move through Takeo, Angkor Thom's ancient South Gate carved with elephants and four giant faces, and the Bayon with its 54 towers each crowned with four faces of the Buddha of Compassion. The day also includes Baphuon, the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King before you return to your hotel by afternoon.

Top questions
Can I adjust the itinerary or skip stops like the spider market?
Yes. The itinerary is flexible and can be adjusted based on weather, season, crowds and your own requests. If you don't want to stop at Skun, your driver can skip it or shorten the visit. The same applies to any other stop on the route.
What is Tonlé Sap Lake and why is Kompong Khleang village worth visiting?
Tonlé Sap is Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, and Kompong Khleang is one of its largest and least-visited floating villages. The wooden-boat visit lets you see how residents live year-round on the water, with stilt houses that rise and fall with the seasonal floods, surrounded by mangrove forest and wildlife. It's a direct look at a way of life that has existed for centuries.
What time does Angkor Wat sunrise start and how long do I spend there?
You meet at your hotel at 4:45am and travel to Angkor Wat to watch the sunrise. After sunrise viewing and time to explore the temple, you return to your hotel for breakfast and rest before continuing to the other sites in the afternoon.
Is accommodation included, and what do I need to arrange myself?
Accommodation is not included in this tour. You book your own hotel in Siem Reap for the overnight stay. The tour covers the car, driver, fuel, tolls, parking and all ground transport, including the wooden boat on Tonlé Sap and entry to the sites you visit.
What's included in the price and what costs extra?
The tour includes private car transport, an English-speaking driver, fuel, tolls, parking, drinking water and hotel pickup and drop-off in Phnom Penh. Temple entrance fees and an optional professional temple guide are not included and can be added at checkout depending on the option you choose.
