The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup around 8 a.m. and heads inland toward Gitega. On the way, you'll pass Kibira National Park, Burundi's second-largest park, home to more than 95 mammal species. The centerpiece is Gishora Drum Sanctuary, where you learn why Burundi earned its reputation as Africa's drumming destination. The sanctuary preserves two ritual drums that have never been beaten (Ruciteme, for whom the forest is cleared, and Murimirwa, for whom the land is cultivated) alongside the ordinary drums the Batimbo drummers used during the country's ceremonial occasions.

After Gishora, the tour moves to Gitega itself. You'll visit the National Museum, which holds Burundi's top historical collection, and tour the Catholic village. Lunch is served in Gitega before the drive back to Bujumbura follows the scenic Bugarama route. A private guide speaks English or French throughout, and the air-conditioned vehicle keeps you comfortable across the full eight-hour day.
