Summary

Skopje’s contrasts, Ottoman echoes & city stories in a day

You’ll cross borders and cultures on this Skopje day trip from Sofia with two guides sharing different perspectives. Wander Ottoman-era streets in the Old Bazaar, climb up to the fortress for wide city views, and pause inside Mother Teresa’s Memorial House. Expect local flavors over lunch and moments that linger long after you return.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We were already halfway to North Macedonia before I realized I’d forgotten my extra socks — not that it mattered much. The drive from Sofia to Skopje is longer than you’d think (about four hours), but our Bulgarian guide kept things lively with stories about the region’s tangled history. At the border, there was this moment of quiet; everyone just sort of stared out at the hills while passports were checked. Crossing felt like stepping into another version of the Balkans — familiar but not quite.

Skopje hit me as a jumble: old Ottoman stone rubbing up against shiny statues and those wild neoclassical columns. Our Macedonian guide, Elena, met us by the Stone Bridge (she waved with both hands — very warm). She walked us through the Old Bazaar first, where you could smell grilled meat drifting out of tiny doorways and hear shopkeepers chatting in Macedonian and Turkish. I tried to say “thank you” in Macedonian at one stall; Elena laughed and corrected me gently (I still can’t pronounce it right). The fortress sits above everything — climbing up there, I remember the wind catching my jacket and the city stretching out below in all its oddness.

The highlight for me was probably Mother Teresa’s Memorial House. It’s small but full of these black-and-white photos that made her childhood feel oddly close. There was this hush inside — people spoke softer somehow. After that, we wandered past those huge statues in Macedonia Square (Alexander on his horse looks almost too big for real life), and then Elena pointed out her favorite bakery for burek. Lunch was on our own; I ended up sharing a table with an older couple from Bitola who insisted I try their ajvar. Spicy, sweet, messy — I got some on my sleeve.

I didn’t expect to feel so much just walking around Skopje for a few hours. It’s not always pretty — sometimes even confusing — but there’s something about hearing two sides of history from two guides that sticks with you long after you’re back on the road to Sofia.
