The experience
The class starts with your instructor explaining the customs, traditions and typical dress of Shopluka, one of Bulgaria's distinct geographic regions. You'll hear about the temperament of the Shop people and the dances that belong to their area: the kind of detail that separates a folk dance from a performance you'd watch in a theater. Then you move into learning one of the most traditional dances, a choro, step by step with hands-on guidance.
Once you've learned the choreography, you dress in authentic traditional costume and perform the dance yourself. This is when you get the photos: you in the garb, moving through the steps you just mastered. The whole experience runs about an hour, and it's designed so anyone can join: children from age 3 are welcome, and no prior dance experience is needed.
