The experience
You arrive in Varna with a free afternoon and no background in the city's Cold War past. This tour starts in the city center, where a guide (if you book privately) or an e-guide (if you go self-guided) walks you through the monuments and streets that shaped Bulgaria under Communist rule. The Retro Museum sits at the heart of it (the only one of its kind in Bulgaria), and holds artifacts, documents and objects from the 1944–1989 period. You move through the exhibits at your own pace, taking in the everyday life, propaganda, and material culture of those decades.
After the museum, you head to the wine tasting. A professional sommelier guides you through three local Bulgarian wines, explaining what you're drinking and why each one matters. This is not a rushed pour-and-move. The sommelier stays with you, answers questions, and connects the wines to the region. The tasting happens in a setting where you can actually talk: to the sommelier, to your guide if you booked privately, or to whoever came with you. The whole experience, from the first monument to the last glass, takes two to three hours.
The route also passes the Sea Garden, Varna's main waterfront park, and the Archaeological Museum if the itinerary allows time. Both are stops you see or enter depending on which option you choose and how the day unfolds. The tour is wheelchair accessible throughout, and children from age four are welcome.

What exactly is in the Retro Museum?
