The experience
What draws people to this trip is the chance to stand on a winter mountain peak without the commitment of skiing or the technical demands of winter mountaineering. You're picked up at 8 AM from your Bansko accommodation and driven 40 minutes to G. Delchev hut (1,485 m), where a chair lift carries you up to Bezbog hut (2,240 m). From there, the snowshoe hike to the summit takes 1.5 to 2 hours: steady climbing but no scrambling or exposed terrain. Your guide is a certified UIMLA mountain professional who speaks English or French.
The payoff is the view from Bezbog Peak itself. At 2,645 m, you're high enough to see across three mountain ranges: the Rila to the east, the Pirin surrounding you, and the Rodopi to the south. The Pirin is Bulgaria's second-highest range and much of it sits under UNESCO protection, so the landscape stays wild even in the middle of winter. You rest at the top before the descent: chair lift back down to G. Delchev, then the 40-minute drive back to Bansko.
Snowshoes and poles are provided, and the activity suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for anyone with poor cardiovascular health. The full day runs about 7 hours from pickup to return. Wi-Fi is available at the hut if you need it.
