The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your Sofia hotel at 8:00 am, then drives roughly three and a half hours to Skopje. A local Macedonian guide takes over for a two-hour walk through the capital, moving between the Old Bazaar (where Ottoman-era caravanserais still line the streets), and the Kale Fortress perched above the city. You'll cross the Stone Bridge, a preserved medieval span over the Vardar River, and stand in the neoclassical Macedonia Square facing statues of Alexander the Great and his father Philip II. The walking section ends at Mother Teresa's memorial house, where a photography collection traces her life from Skopje to her work abroad.
After lunch in Skopje, a two-hour drive takes you into Kosovo and Pristina, where the walking tour covers the National Library (completed in 1982, ranked among Europe's most unusual buildings), the 15th-century Carshia Mosque, and the Imperial Mosque built by Sultan Mehmed II. You'll sleep overnight at a 3-star hotel in Prizren's old town. Day two begins at 8:30 am with a walk through Prizren's narrow cobblestone streets, passing the 16th-century Mahmet Pasha Hamam and the 17th-century Sinan Pasha Mosque before climbing to the fortress for views across the mountains. The drive back to Skopje takes about two and a half hours, leaving time for lunch before the final three-hour return to Sofia, where you're dropped at your chosen location around 15:00.
