The experience

Four to seven and a half hours on the water, depending on which option you pick. The boat, a Rafnar 36, is built with a hull designed for the North Atlantic, which means it handles the Caribbean swells without the wave-slamming impact that makes smaller boats uncomfortable. You get picked up from wherever you're staying and brought straight to the boat. From there, the day is yours to shape: snorkelling stops, beach time, a particular anchorage, a route that follows the wind. The operator is registered in the BVI, so there are no surprise fees or delays waiting for paperwork.

Everything is included in the price: snorkelling gear from Scuba Pro, ocean-friendly sunscreen, towels, floats, and a full bar. Beer, cocktails, soft drinks and water. You can request specific wines or seltzers before the trip if you want something particular on board. WiFi is available, so you're not cut off if you need to stay in touch. The boat sleeps a private group, which means you're not sharing the day with strangers, and the skipper speaks English and can answer questions about the islands, the reefs or the conditions you're sailing through.

The half-day options run 4 hours and leave either in the morning or the afternoon, so you can fit the charter around other plans. The full-day trip is 7.5 hours, which gives you time to reach the outer islands and spend real time in the water. There's no fuel surcharge.
