The experience

The mangrove lagoon on Beef Island is a nursery for juvenile marine life (turtles, stingrays, baby sharks, barracuda), and paddling through it means moving slowly enough to watch them in their habitat instead of chasing them. You'll choose between a two-person kayak or a stand-up paddleboard, depending on your experience, and the route takes you along the reef first, then into the lagoon at the downwind end before heading back upwind, sheltered by the mangrove trees themselves. The guide navigates you through different quiet corners where wildlife passes and the mangrove ecosystem reveals itself without the noise of a motorboat.

A local guide leads the paddle and explains what you're seeing (the sea, the land, the culture) as the day unfolds. The whole outing runs about two and a half hours, which is long enough to move through the lagoon without rushing but short enough to fit into a day on the island. If the season is right, you might be asked to plant a mangrove seed as part of the recovery effort following Hurricane Irma in 2017, turning the paddle into something that leaves the lagoon better than you found it.
