Summary

Explore Sarajevo’s Olympic peaks and riverside trails with a local

You’ll set out from Sarajevo with a local guide to explore Trebević’s Olympic bobsleigh track, stand on Igman’s ski slopes, sip hot tea on Bjelasnica mountain, and wander through the peaceful Spring of Bosna River park — all with hotel pickup included. Expect fresh air, honest stories, and moments you’ll remember long after heading home.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We started out from Sarajevo, just after breakfast — our guide, Emir, was already waiting outside the hotel, waving like he’d known us for years. The city faded behind us pretty quickly, replaced by these thick pine forests and that sharp mountain air you only get up here. First stop was Trebević Mountain. I didn’t expect to actually walk along the old bobsleigh track from the 1984 Winter Olympics — it’s covered in graffiti now, echoing with birds instead of crowds. Emir told us stories about how the city came together for those games; you could almost picture it if you closed your eyes for a second. My shoes crunched on broken leaves and bits of concrete — weirdly satisfying.

On Igman mountain, we stood at the bottom of what used to be ski jumps. It’s hard to imagine people flying off those things on purpose. There was this cold wind that made my ears sting (should’ve brought a hat), but Emir just laughed and said it was “good for waking up.” He pointed out where Nordic skiing and biathlon events happened — apparently some legendary finish happened right there in ‘84, but I’ll admit I’m not much of a sports historian. Still, being there felt oddly moving. We had hot tea in a wooden hut on Bjelasnica next — honestly, that tea tasted better than any fancy café back home. Maybe it was just the altitude or maybe it was because everyone seemed so relaxed up there.

The last part took us down to the Spring of Bosna River. It’s this green park where water bubbles up everywhere between old oak trees and villas from the Austro-Hungarian days. You can take a horse carriage if you want (we walked), but either way it smells like wet grass and wood smoke. There were families picnicking even though it was chilly — one little kid tried to feed me bread for some reason? Anyway, I still think about how quiet it got near the water, just ducks paddling around and nothing else really pressing in.
