The experience
The cable car system is how La Paz moves now: a network of lines strung across the city at different heights, each one framing a different slice of the Altiplano. You'll ride five separate cabins with a local guide who points out the city's layout, the buildings that matter, and the way the terrain drops away beneath you. The aerial views let you see Illimani, the mountain that dominates the skyline, and the sprawl of neighborhoods that would take hours to cross on foot. You stop to take pictures and get your bearings from the sky before descending.
The guide then leads you south to the Valley of the Moon, a landscape of volcanic rock formations that genuinely looks like another planet: rust-colored earth, strange shapes, Andean plants and animals scattered across it. After that comes the markets, where locals prepare food fresh, and you taste what they make. The final leg takes you to Jaen Street, the most famous street in the city, where you walk among the colonial buildings, sample regional drinks and food, and experience the place as residents do: the customs, the routines, the way people move through their day. You end with a private ride back to your hotel.
Private transportation is included throughout, so you're not waiting for shared shuttles or figuring out the metro. The guide handles the route and the stops. You just follow and eat. Bottled water and snacks come with it. Note that entry to the Valley of the Moon is not included in the price.

Is this one for you?You ride the cable cars with a guide rather than exploring on your own, which means you get the aerial views plus the local knowledge of where to eat and what the neighborhoods actually are: useful if you want context and don't speak Spanish, or if navigating the system solo feels like too much planning.

Top questions
What does riding the La Paz cable cars actually show you?
The cable car system gives you aerial views of the entire city layout, the Illimani mountain, and the neighborhoods that spread across the Altiplano. You see buildings, streets and terrain from above in a way ground-level walking never reveals, and you can photograph the panorama from each cabin.
What is the Valley of the Moon like?
The Valley of the Moon is a volcanic landscape south of the city where the earth has formed into strange, otherworldly shapes and colors. It looks like another planet, with Andean plants and animals living among the rock formations, and it's a place most visitors miss because it's not on the standard tourist circuit.
Does the guide speak English?
The guide speaks Spanish. If you need interpretation or prefer another language, confirm that with the operator before booking.
How much walking is involved?
You ride the cable cars and travel by private vehicle for most of the tour. The main walking happens on Jaen Street at the end, where you explore the colonial buildings and sample food and drinks at street level. That stretch is short and at a relaxed pace.
What food will I taste?
You visit local markets where residents prepare regional food, and on Jaen Street you sample local cuisine and drinks. The guide chooses the stops and the tastings based on what's available that day. The specific dishes vary.
Does this tour work for people with mobility issues?
The tour is wheelchair accessible. The cable cars themselves accommodate wheelchairs, all surfaces and areas are accessible, and specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with small children. Public transportation options are also nearby if you prefer an alternative.
