The experience
The morning starts at 7:30 a.m. with pickup and a one-hour drive to La Cumbre, the starting point at the mountain pass. You ride a full suspension bike with hydraulic disk brakes, fitted with a fullface helmet, gloves, jacket and trousers. The first leg is 22 km of downhill on asphalt road: steep enough to demand focus but wide enough to build confidence. After 45 minutes you reach a police checkpoint where you pay a 50 bolivianos entrance fee for the national park. The guide stops for water, photos and bike checks along the way, and a safety van trails the group.
Leg two is the Death Road itself: 10 km of the route's tightest, most technical section. The group stays compact for safety, and there's snack time with chocolate and fruit partway through. The final leg drops another 32 km through jungle terrain, starting with a waterfall splash, and ends in the village of Yolosa. From there you drive back to La Paz on the newer road, arriving around 5 p.m.
The ride finishes at a hotel where you shower, swim and eat a buffet lunch. The guide speaks English and Spanish, and photographs taken during the day are sent to you by email afterward. Groups stay small, one guide for every six riders, so the pace and stops can adjust to the group's comfort.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
How steep is Death Road itself, and what makes it different from the other two legs?
Death Road is the 10 km middle section where the route is narrowest and most technical, ridden in a tight group for safety. The first leg is a 22 km asphalt warm-up on a wider road to build confidence, and the final leg is 32 km of jungle terrain that is steep but less exposed than Death Road.
What happens if I'm not an experienced mountain biker?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The first leg is designed to let you develop confidence and get used to the bike before the more demanding sections, and the guide and safety van are there throughout.
What's included in the lunch after the ride?
Lunch is a buffet served at the hotel in Yolosa where the ride ends. Water and snacks are provided during the ride as well. An extra drink during lunch can be added at checkout.
Do I need to arrange my own transport to the starting point?
No. Round-trip transport from La Paz to La Cumbre and back is included. Pickup happens at 7:30 a.m. and you return to the city around 5 p.m.
What protective gear do I wear, and is it provided?
You wear a fullface helmet, gloves, jacket and trousers, all provided. The bike is a full suspension model with hydraulic disk brakes, also supplied.
