The experience

The Memorial Chorten opens the day. You'll circumambulate it three times clockwise with locals, passing the 36 larger-than-life deity carvings in erotic poses, and make a wish at the Buddha statue. From there the route moves to the Takin preserve, where your guide walks you through the legend of Bhutan's national animal: a creature with a goat's head and a cow's body that looks like nothing else on earth.

The Centenary Farmers' Market is where Thimphu residents haggle for the season's organic produce, and you're free to buy. After lunch (included, Bhutanese style), you watch students at the National Institute of Zorig Chosum practicing the 13 traditional arts and crafts that have defined Bhutanese culture. The Royal Textile Museum comes next, a state-of-the-art space showcasing weaving techniques and displaying the bridal dress and hand-crafted shoes Queen Jetsun Pema wore at the 2011 royal wedding. The day closes at Tashichho Dzong, the "Palace of the Glorious Religion": a fortress built in the ancient style without nails, steel, or architectural blueprints, a physical lesson in how Bhutanese builders worked centuries ago.

Private transportation means no shared van or set departure time. Your guide meets you at your hotel. The five- to eight-hour span gives you breathing room at each stop instead of a rushed sprint through landmarks. Coffee and tea are included throughout.
