If you want to push your limits in Belize’s jungle, this tour delivers: tough hike, wild views, pro guides, and a heart-thumping rappel down Antelope Falls.
Muddy sneakers, damp shirt clinging to my back—the climb up to Antelope Falls is no joke. The rainforest here hums with life; you’ll hear cicadas buzzing and catch a whiff of wild ginger if you’re lucky. Our guide, Luis, stopped every so often to point out a toucan or the odd blue morpho butterfly flashing by. The trail gets steep near the top—roots for handholds, slick rocks underfoot—but that first glimpse of the falls makes it all worth it. Mist on your face, sunlight glinting off the water, and way off in the distance, you can just make out the Caribbean Sea.
We cooled off with a quick swim in the upper pool—water’s colder than you’d think after that sweaty hike. Then came the real rush: harness on, double-checked by Luis (he’s been guiding here for years), and suddenly I was edging backwards over a 200-foot drop. The sound of water pounding beside me drowned out everything else for a second. Two rappels down—legs shaking a bit at first—and then I was grinning like an idiot at the bottom. If you’re into adventure travel and want something raw and real in Belize, this is it.
You should be comfortable with steep hikes and able to handle about 1½ hours of uphill walking. It’s best for active teens and adults.
